Kaos GL and Pink Life associations held LGBT training for teachers in the western city of Balikesir on 13-14 September 2014. The training was hosted by the Balikesir Branch of the Education and Science Workers’ Union.
About 50 teachers attended the training that Kaos GL’s Umut Guner presented on the development of sexual orientation and gender identity as well as related concepts and definitions. Kaos GL’s advisory committee member Prof. Melek Goregenli lectured on the ideologies that constitute the building blocks of discrimination and homophobia.
Discussions focused primarily on the moments of encounter between a teacher, school administration, families, classmates and LGBT students or students who do not conform to gender roles.
Participants searched for answers to questions such as “What do we do when we encounter an LGBT child? What do class teachers do? How about their classmates, the guidance counselor, and the school administration?” Participants emphasized that LGBT children, as are LGBT people, are usually associated with the concept of “problem.”
