The 20-article bill, popularly known as Censorship Law, was approved by the Parliament with AKP and MHP votes. The bill, imposes restrictions not only on journalists but also on everyone’s right to obtain information or right to be in the news.

The bill, whose full name is “Law Proposal to Amend the Bill on Regulation of Broadcasts on the Internet and Combating Crimes Committed Through These Broadcasts”, was approved by the Parliament with the votes of the members of Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). 

A new kind of crime titled “openly disseminating information misleading the public” is added to the Turkish Penal Code, under the color of “combatting against disinformation”, with the approved bill imposing severe restrictions not only on journalists but also on everyone’s rights to obtain information or right to be in the news. The bill envisages an imprisonment sentence of 1 to 3 years for news and posts considered disinformation.
