Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) İstanbul MP Kezban Konukçu Kok brought up the November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on the agenda and submitted a parliamentary question on the elimination of violence and harassment.

Within the scope of the parliamentary question, it is drawn attention to the fact that women and LGBTI+ people were facing November 25 with the negative effects of the economic crisis and the increase in violence and femicide as a result of the current government’s hate language against women and LGBTI+ people, sexist policies and perspectives that seek to devalue women.

In the motion, Kok drew attention to the state’s responsibility to ensure the right to life of women and LGBTI+ people and underlined that all necessary measures should be taken in order to prevent all forms of violence against women, especially femicide, to implement gender equality policies, to prosecute crimes, to punish offenders and to implement policies that include effective cooperation in combating violence against women. And she demanded that the decision of withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention be reversed and that a parliamentary commission of inquiry be set up to fulfil the obligations arising from the Convention and to ratify and effectively implement the ILO Convention No. 190 on Eliminating Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.
