The Women's Human Rights Association took the decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
In a statement made on its social media accounts, the association said:
“We took the decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)! We continue our struggle against the unlawful decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention. We will continue to struggle to take back the Istanbul Convention, to have it effectively implemented and to live free and equal lives free from violence. We are not giving up on the Istanbul Convention!”
What happened?
As a result of the presidential decree numbered 3718 published in the Official Gazette on 20 March 2021, President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan decided to ‘terminate the convention’.
Erdoğan had targeted the Istanbul Convention again in the previous days, saying ‘The law protects, not the convention’:
“Combating violence against women and children continues to be the most important element of our policies aiming to strengthen the family institution. Today, I once again express the importance we attach to the uncompromising implementation of Law No. 6284, which came into force during the period of our governments. The law, not the contract, keeps us alive. With this understanding, we will hopefully continue our persistent attitude on this issue in the future.”
