Censored drag queen Grumpy Virgin is on screen against “blinding bans” through the CHP Youth Branch election song performed by OzBi.

The new song of Republican People’s Party (CHP) Youth Branches Change is in your Hands campaign was released on all platforms.

The song of the #DeğişimSeninElinde (Change is in your Hands) campaign, organized for young people who will vote for the first time, was vocalized by OzBi.

The music video of the song named “Just Us” draws attention to the economic crisis, poverty and bans. “In the clip, which also includes footage from İstanbul Feminist Night March, the rainbow banner written “What is a ban dear!” on winks at the audience.

Huysuz Virgin (Grumpy Virgin) appears on the screen while the “blinding bans” lyrics were vocalizing. The scene in which Grumpy Virgin, the drag character portrait by Seyfi Dursunoğlu, who was banned by Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) and died during the ban, removes their wig, is followed by Zeki Müren in company with the lyrics “How beautiful those songs will be this time”.

Grumpy Virgin: In the shadow of censorship

Grumpy Virgin was one of the most beloved and most popular characters on our screens. Seyfi Dursunoğlu’s stage and screen life of more than half a century, was passed struggling against censorship, trying to survive in the shadow of these censorships, making homophobic and transphobic statements from time to time, and despite all the odds, paving many paths with their performance as a lubunya (queer) icon.

Dursunoğlu, who died in 2020, spent the last period of his life invisibly due to the bans imposed on his stage performance. Celebrities poured out on their funeral. Grumpy’s loneliness turned into a race of adoption after his death.

Censorship killed Grumpy Virgin in 2000s and Seyfi Dursunoğlu died 20 years later. Here are two articles in Turkish for the traces left by them:
