Felicity Party begun its election campaign by using an anti-LGBTI+ rhetoric.
The presentation meeting of the Saadet Party’s (Felicity Party) mayoral candidate was held at the Lütfi Kırdar Congress Center on Sunday, January 28. The party’s candidate for mayor of Istanbul was Birol Aydın. Birol Aydın targeted LGBTI+ people in his speech at the launch event. According to the news coverage published on Evrensel newspaper, Aydın spoke as follows:
“We are on the verge of an important decision. Unfortunately, today’s Istanbul is a place where the uncanniness is about. Istanbul has been systematically polluted. Unfortunately, drugs and prostitution have taken over some neighborhoods, the shelter crisis is crushing people of all ages. Istanbul has turned into a kind of geyser. The perversions under the name of LGBTI have had an impact in every area.”
Recently, as part of its ‘moral municipalism’ campaign, the Yeniden Refah Partisi (New Welfare Party) had targeted LGBTI+ freedom of association in a promotional film:
“If there is no morality, there is LGBT! We will eliminate perverted organizations from our city!”
