A statement on the occasion of the IDAHO was printed to remind the compromises that Bosnia-Herzegovina has to accomplish in the fight against discrimination towards LGBT persons.

Sarajevo Open Centre, on the occasion of the International day against homophobia (IDAHO), has organized a three days of events in order to raise public awareness about the existence of homophobia and transphobia in B&H and look for different ways to fight it. Those were the following:

The newsletter of LGBT activism in B&H

On May the 16th a film called “Prayers for Bobby” was screened within our Programme of Sex, Pop & Politics. Before the screening the Ambassador of the United States, Mr Moon, and the Ambassador of Switerzland have talked to the audience, making references to the necessity of commemorating IDAHO and to fight against homophobia in B&H. After the projection, a Croatian LGBT activist, Goran Duhaček, spoke to the audience about the causes of homophobia and about the acceptance of LGBT persons by their families.

Sarajevo Open Centre regularly organises Open forums, this is a project that engages different discussions on topics concerning society of BiH throughout the year. On this occasion the 17th of May an Open forum was held with the title “LGBT rights in the Western Balkans” where we discussed about among other things, the importance of emancipation and empowerment of the LGBT community, which has the responsibility to fight for their social and legislative equality. The main speakers at this Open Forum were: Gordan Duhaček (Zagreb Pride), Damir Banović (Law Faculty Sarajevo), Ljiljana Zurovac (Press Council B&H) and Goran Miletić (Civil Rights Defenders). The Forum was moderated by Sasa Gavric, CEO of Sarajevo Open Centre. Among the public several persons representing different CSO among B&H as well as some public institutions, like the Ombudsmen office, represented by the Head of the antidiscrimination department and the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and also representatives of the international community as for example Mary Anne Henessey, the Head of the Council of Europe in B&H.

As well on May the 17th and with the initiative of Sarajevo Open Centre some of the representatives of the International Community, both from the Embassies and the Intergovernmental organizations, have published an statement on the occasion of the IDAHO to remind the compromises that Bosnia-Herzegovina has to accomplish in the fight against discrimination towards LGBT persons.

On May the 18th at 11 a.m. in Art cinema Kriterion a “queer breakfast” was organised with the main purpose of presenting the translation of the book “Born to be gay : History of homosexuality”. This project was possible thanks to the cooperation of the Kingdom of Norway Embassy to B&H. Everyone present obtained a copy of the book, as well as former publications of Sarajevo open centre: “Lesbian and gay human rights textbook” and “Rights and freedoms of LGBT individuals – Sexual orientation and gender identity in the positive law of BiH”. This innovative format was a success in terms of the affluence of persons coming and participating actively in the event.
