On November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, protests were held all over Turkey. LGBTI+'s and women took to the streets, especially in Ankara and Istanbul.
November 25 in Ankara: "We are here as transgender and ignored LGBTI+'s
Women and LGBTI+s gathered at Kolej Square with the call of Ankara Women's Platform on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Women and LGBTI+s marched from Kolej Square to Sakarya Street and were prevented by the police.
According to the news on Sendika.org; the police tried to detain one person. The police barricaded the women and LGBTI+s who entered Sakarya Street again. Women and LGBTI+s broke through the barricade and entered Sakarya Street. Women and LGBTI+'s who entered Sakarya Street read the press statement in Turkish, Arabic, Kurdish and Armenian. Here are the lines from the press statement:
“Against male-state violence, as women and LGBTI+'s we stand together for an equal and free life! Male-state violence will not subjugate our bodies! You attack pride marches and trans marches! We will not let homophobia and transphobia pass! This body is ours!"
November 25 in Istanbul: “The world would move, if trans people were free!”
On November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the police blockaded Tünel Square before the march to be held in Taksim/Tünel at 19.30 with the call of the 25 November Women's Platform.
According to the news on Sendika.org, most of the roads to reach Beyoğlu were blocked as the subway and ferries were stopped as of 15.00. Journalists in Tünel Square were evacuated from Tünel Square. TOMAs were brought to Tünel Square via Istiklal Street. A large number of detention vehicles and police were kept waiting at Galatasaray Square.
Women and LGBTI+s met around Asmalımescit, Karaköy and Şişhane and marched towards Karaköy piece by piece. Women and LGBTI+'s marching were blockaded by the police. Breaking through the blockade, women and LGBTI+s came together in front of the pier in Karaköy with the slogan “Jin, jiyan, azadi”.
Transgender activists also reacted to the introduction of e-prescription requirement for drugs used in hormone replacement therapy:
"The other day they presented something that will take away the hormone rights of trans people. Let's raise our voices to them from this square: The world would move, if trans people were free!"
After the end of the protest, the police took detention vehicles to the places where women and LGBTI+'s were blockaded. 169 people were detained. 25 November Women's Platform said that 162 people were released and 7 people are still in detention and emphasized that they will follow the detentions.
November 25 in Mersin: “Our struggle against those who wage war against LGBTI+'s is the safest place!”
Women and LGBTI+s took to the streets in Mersin on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with the call of the Women's Platform. The protest of women and LGBTI+s started at Kushimoto Street and ended at Özgecan Arslan Square. During the march, where the participation of women and LGBTI+ was higher than in previous years, the police tried to prevent rainbow flags from entering the area. Despite all the obstacles; rainbow flags waved in the area, women and LGBTI+s read the press statement.
